Challenge: Can You Name This Canadian Company?

Let’s start the week off this week with some trivia, shall we? This one is going to be a tough one. Got your thinking caps on? Okay, here goes…

What wildly successful Canadian company do the following strange facts apply to:

  • The company once sued Calvin Klein, and ultimately forced the fashion giant to settle out of court.
  • The company atmosphere has been likened to a cult, referring to their retail associates as “educators” and requiring employees to complete a “clearing” if they arrive at work at all stressed. This involves pouring out your heart and soul, and being coached on all your personal problems before you can begin work.
  • Quotes from the controversial author, Ayn Rand, have been printed on the company’s bags.
  • The company once claimed, falsely, that its most popular product was made from seaweed.
  • The founder of this company has a strange and offputting tendency to refer to himself in the third person.
  • The company’s ideal customers are a childless, successful businesswoman who can do anything, named Ocean, and an athletic adonis named Duke.
  • Their corporate manifesto includes the line, “Do not use cleaning chemicals on your kitchen surfaces, someone will inevitably make a sandwich on your counter.”
  • The company once offered free products to individuals who would stand naked in their store windows.

Any ideas? If you guessed the Vancouver-based, yoga-loving, active wear phenomenon, Lululemon, you guessed right! The founder, Chip Wilson, is a character all right, and was quoted as saying,

"Ultimately, Lululemon was formed because female education levels, breast cancer, yoga / athletics and the desire to dress feminine came together all at one time."

He has since sold his share in the company and taken his strange antics with him, but he left behind a strange legacy at Lululemon.
