The 5 Most Popular Vacation Destinations For Canadians

Destinations Cuba

If you’re anything like me, when work gets stressful or hectic, you find yourself daydreaming about some remote beach, palms leaning over you for just the right amount of shade. You’re probably waving down a server for another Corona while you appreciate the mild breeze coming off the waves breaking in front of you. Yes, we Canadians do love to travel, but do you know where we travel the most? I’ll tell you! Here are the top five most popular travel destinations for Canadians:

5. Cuba. Compared to other all-inclusive destinations in the Carribean, Cuba is pretty affordable. For a while there, our neighbours to the South couldn’t visit Cuba legally, making it kind of exclusive for us Canucks, as well. Cuba is a great food destination, and a spectacular place for world history buffs to see. If you’re a lover of the literary arts, you can stop by some of the places Hemingway used to frequent, and if you appreciate good music, Cuba has it everywhere. Canadians love to visit Cuba and it is our fifth most visited place in the world.

4. France. Who doesn’t want to see the Eiffel Tower, or smell the fresh baked baguettes waft over the Champs-Élysées? Art lovers will wander the Louvre and history lovers will explore the Palace of Versailles where Marie Antoinette uttered, “Let them eat cake.” You can explore the many places Dan Brown wrote about in the Da Vinci Code or eat rich French cuisine until you have to undo your belt. Many Canadians also speak French, adding to our love of this destination. France is fourth on the list of the most frequently visited places by Canucks.

3. The United Kingdom. Of course we visit here often! She’s our Queen, too! Canadians who adore watching the royals will find a trip to the UK enchanting, while others might be visiting family. Some want to see a bit of the old world: the castles and Stone Henge and the London Bridge. Others are looking for a culinary adventure, exploring the homeland of big names in food like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay. The United Kingdom, though an expensive destination, has a pretty stable position as the number three most visited overseas destination by Canadians.

2. Mexico. It’s cheap, fun and carefree. We don’t have to leave the continent to visit Mexico, either. One of the top all-inclusive destinations in the world, Mexico boasts gorgeous beaches, incredible nightlife and affordable food and drinks. I don’t know too many Canadians who haven’t visited Mexico, and you probably don’t either, making it no surprise it’s the second most visited place by our fellow countrymen.

Disney World1. USA - This should not come as a shock to any of you, being as most of us live within a reasonable distance from the border. It’s the most easily accessible destination for any Canadian and in many places, it’s also incredibly affordable. Offering attractions like Disney World and Times Square and the stunning tropical paradise in Hawaii, the United States has something for everyone. As a native English speaking country, as well, Canadians find navigating their travels there fairly easy. Admit it, you have a mental list of all the states you’ve visited, don’t you? I think I’ve been to eight. No, nine. How many have you seen?

Did any of these destinations surprise you? Was there a vacation spot you expected to see on the list that isn’t? Let us know in the comments, and here’s to a great weekend ahead!
